Ποιος έλληνας επιστήμονας θα θελήσει να επιστρέψει στην Ελλάδα όταν ψηφίζονται νόμοι που αντί να προάγουν, υποθάλπτουν την έρευνα; Παρακαλώ πολύ να λάβετε υπόψη τις απόψεις διακεκριμένων επιστημόνων του εξωτερικού (παραθέτω ενδεικτικά μερικές), οι οποίοι υπέγραψαν το παρακάτω petition: https://www.petitions.net/against_detaching_the_national_observatory_of_athens_from_greeces_network_of_research_centers Δρ Άλκηστη Μπονάνου Διευθύντρια Ερευνών ΙΑΑΔΕΤ Εθνικό Αστεροσκοπείο Αθηνών ——————————————————————————————————————— It is unwise to make drastic changes such as this without prior broad and thorough consultation with local and international experts. Scientific infrastructure in general should not be harnessed to practical goals that require dedicated institutions and personnel. Avishay Gal-Yam (Rehovot, 2023-11-19) Dean of Physics, Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel https://www.weizmann.ac.il/particle/galyam/home ——————————————————————————————————————— This decision is ludicrous and utterly damaging to the world-class astronomical research that is done at the NOA. Jacco van Loon (Audlem, 2023-11-19) Reader in Astrophysics and Observatory Director, Keele University, UK https://www.keele.ac.uk/scps/physicsandastrophysics/ourpeople/jthvanloon/ ——————————————————————————————————————— This decision poses an imminent threat to the research advancement in Greece as well as to ΝΟΑ itself as a famous research center/institution and definitively should not be supported! It seems that such suggestion comes from administrational / political persons that do not understand the important role and purpose of NOA and science. It seems that no consultation has taken place with the scientific experts and science managers who understand their business and importance, this is a shame. Definitively it does not "belong" to civil protection, research will unnecessarily suffer as it will mean operations only which is not in the interests of the country and how it is seen from abroad. Jürg Luterbacher (Geneva, 2023-11-19) Chief Scientist and Director Science and Innovation Department, World Meteorological Organization (WMO) https://www.uni-giessen.de/de/fbz/fb07/fachgebiete/geographie/arbeitsgruppen/klima/mitarbeiter/luterbacher ——————————————————————————————————————— NOA has a long tradition of high quality research and deserves to remain in Greece's network of research centers. Robert Holzworth (Seattle, 2023-11-19) Professor of Earth and Space Science, University of Washington, USA https://earthweb.ess.washington.edu/holzworth/ ——————————————————————————————————————— I support this petition in view of the arguments provided. I would try to be constructive and do not rule out collaboration altogether, but promote this with relevant NOA elements via MoUs, as you rightfully say. Try to educate them on what NOA is and what it stands for and let it be very clear that they will need to hear from you, the experts, not you hearing from them. It is about time Greece learns that the voice of its scientific community is not skewed by the exclaims of politics. Manolis Georgoulis (Laurel, Maryland, 2023-11-19) Senior Professional Staff Scientist, Johns Hopkins University APL, USA https://www.linkedin.com/in/manolis-georgoulis-41021631/?originalSubdomain=gr ——————————————————————————————————————— I am signing because research institutions should not be controlled by politicians but managed by top scientists directly. Pasquale Di Bari (London, 2023-11-19) Professor, University of Southampton, UK https://www.southampton.ac.uk/~pdb1d08/ ——————————————————————————————————————— NOA is mostly carrying out fundamental research which is unrelated to Climate or Civil Protection. Its natural place is part of GSRI. Moving it will jeopardize its unique scientific position and future contribution to science. Nir Shaviv (Jerusalem, 2023-11-20) Professor, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel http://old.phys.huji.ac.il/~shaviv/ ——————————————————————————————————————— The National Observatory of Athens is a wonderful public research center with an excellent global reputation in the international astronomy community. It should continue to be operated as an active research center. It should not be moved into an organization that is not focused on research. Richard White (Baltimore, 2023-11-20) Astronomer, Space Telescope Science Institute, USA https://www.stsci.edu/stsci-research/research-directory/rick-white ——————————————————————————————————————— I consider it essential to protect and maintain this important national and iconic emblem of Greek astronomy for now and the future. Quentin Parker (PokFuLam, 2023-11-20) Professor, The University of Hong Kong, China https://www.scifac.hku.hk/people/parker-quentin-a ——————————————————————————————————————— Although astrophysics informs climate science, they are not one and the same, and need to be managed very differently. Mordecai-Mark MacLow (New York, 2023-11-20) Adjunct Professor, Columbia University; Professor and Curator, AMNH, USA https://www.amnh.org/research/staff-directory/mordecai-mark-mac-low https://www.astro.columbia.edu/content/mordecai-mark-mac-low ——————————————————————————————————————— I agree with the content of the letter and support the petition. Artemio Herrero (La Laguna, 2023-11-20) Professor, Instituto Astrofisica de Canarias, Spain https://www.iac.es/en/mobility/dr-artemio-herrero-stellar-and-interstellar-physics ——————————————————————————————————————— I fully agree with the statement, this move is not logical. Armin Rest (Baltimore, 2023-11-21) Associate Astronomer, Space Telescope Science Institute, USA https://www.stsci.edu/stsci-research/research-directory/armin-rest ——————————————————————————————————————— Research institutes are not commodities. Their primary function is to pursue knowledge, and they should have the freedom to do so. Michael Peskin (Sunnyvale, 2023-11-21) Professor of Particle Physics and Astrophysics, Stanford University, USA https://profiles.stanford.edu/michael-peskin ——————————————————————————————————————— It's important to ensure the continuous contributions of the Observatory of Athens to scientific advancement in Astrophysics, Cosmology and Earth Sciences. Elena Terlevich (Cambridge, 2023-11-21) Full professor, INAOE, Mexico https://astro.inaoep.mx/directorio/investigadores/elena-terlevich ——————————————————————————————————————— I know researchers at the National Observatory of Athens, who do internationally-recognized astrophysics research. It's important that they are managed by researchers, so as to best support their ability to conduct high-quality research. Craig Heinke (Edmonton, 2023-11-25) Professor of Physics, University of Alberta, Canada https://sites.ualberta.ca/~heinke/ ——————————————————————————————————————— I can not see logic in the proposed reorganization. NOA is a research organization whereas MCCCP currently comprises largely operational organizations. As such, research would not be well served by an operationally focused administrative system.
