Please add my name to the list of people who are firmly against the Aquaculture plan for the island of Poros. I moved here from the U.S. because of the natural beauty and serenity of this particular island. I have happily welcomed over 8,000 people from North America to lovely Poros over the past twenty years - both educational groups and artist groups, as well as many friends and family members. They all have been delighted with the simple natural beauty they’ve experienced here, and they do return. Several of my friends are actually planning to retire on Poros in a few years. As well as the unsightliness of a Farmed Fish Industry, its production systems will add pollution to our clean waters, introduce the risks of disease and parasites to our wild fish stock, and endanger our sea animals and birds. I have read that fish farm sites must be, by law, far from places where marine mammals live or hunt and birds congregate. The fish farms planned for Poros will not be far away, but just inside our once pristine swimming coves. Our Sanctuary of Poseidon is giving us new information about ancient times with each year the excavations continue. I feel certain that the Archeology Ministry is also opposed to nearby industrialization. The Aquaculture plan will eventually destroy our greatest resource, the sea, and our tourism for the future, as well as make life on Poros unsatisfactory for everyone. "This is what happens when human population and technology stress natural ecosystems beyond their ability to regenerate. That's the very basis for inventing aquaculture, to increase production beyond natural limits." I understand that Greece needs revenue, yet aquaculture is not a logical way to resolve financial issues when the beauty and cleanliness of the sea is one of the reasons Greece is touristic. I will continue to help our Mayor and all Poriotis and other friends of this island in an effort to put an end to this nightmare proposal. Yours Sincerely, Pamela Jane Rogers 5 May 2011
