Dear Mrs. Minister, Dear Mr. Vice-Minister I have been to Kefalonia on many occasions over the past 20 years. The island has been very much advertised in Holland for its natural beauty. The beautiful closed natural bay of Argostoli has a lot of potential and could attract to the island more Greeks and foreign visitors if it was to be used correctly and in an environmentally friendly way. I have been informed that your Ministry in prepared to enact law which will give the fish farms operating in the bay the possibility to stay there for many years. At a time where all over Europe the environment is playing a major role in suburban development, I fail to understand why fish farms in Kefalonia need to operate in a naturally closed bay rather than out at sea where the conditions for their operations are better and where most fish farms operate anyway. There is surely remote areas on the Island that the fish farms can be moved to. The degradation of the water quality and in general the degradation of the bay's ecosystem in the last few years is evident. For years we spent many hours per day in the blue waters of the bay with our children. We stayed in near by villages enjoyed the culture of the locals and their kindness. On occasion we brought new friends from Holland who then came back with there friends and so on. We all found the bay of Argostoli to be the ideal place for snorkeling. It has the small church engraved in the rocks, Agios Spyridon, it has natural and beautiful beaches tucked away from mass tourism. The Agios Sotiras beach, Stefani and others. Unfortunately fish farms operate less than a kilometer away. Before its too late.....please act now and protect this beautiful area for all future generations. Faithfully yours, Helena Wagter Eidnhoven Holland
