I am a first generation Greek/ Australian. The first time I heard about the huge problem of stray animals and mistreatment of animals, in general, in Greece, (including donkeys, horses, cats and dogs, etc), I was appauled. I was especially disappointed and disgusted to discover the manner in which this issue is being treated. I have heard and seen photographs of poisonings and hangings and other horrible, systematic cruelty, inflicted on animals when the problem was first caused by people. People are the ones not sterilizing their pets and the Government seems to be doing NOTHING to ensure this. People are the ones psychologically damaging their animals to the point where the animals are no longer able to function. Consequently they are mistreated for not being able to their job, but it was people who created this problem and it becomes a vicious cycle. I have heard about a lack of justice for animals which amazes me from a country with such a rich and beautiful history. Greece should be leading the way with issues such as this. Instead, it seems to be going backwards. I have lost some pride in my heritage since discovering that Greece is not dealing with this problem in an INTELLIGENT manner. The year is 2011 and a country like Greece should be enlightened enough to deal with animal welfare issues properly. I love Greece, I love my family there, and my heritage but in NO WAY do I love what the poor suffering animals in Greece are going through. It is disgraceful and I am ashamed of it.
