Anyone who has been dealing with the Greek Cruise industry and in general with tourism (restaurant, taxis, coffee shops, stores) related to Cruises knows how important is the cabotage, and how much was and still negatively affecting the industry. When the prime Minister announced the end of the cabotage all the cruise lines were looking at Greece. All cruise lines were reviwing their 2012 itinerary as the 2011 is already booked and closed. Almost all lines were having thoughts for : A) Piraeus - Piraeus 7 days Cruises with only one Turkish port in the middle (today is 4 Greek - 2 Turksih) and the most important, B) for letting vessel/s in the Greek Waters during winter. Why ? because Greece is fantastic destination for them that sells ! Greece is loosing an opportunity to become the nbr one destination in the world , compared to Alaska and Caribbean, which are presently the nbr one in cruise (ships arrivals). The exact extra revenue cant be estimated so you can have one final nbr … But does it really make so much difference if its 5 Million per year or 5.5??? This is “additional” revenue that will never reach us, as long as the cruise lines cant do Piraeus - Piraeus cruises with any Flag. So if the country , the government , the citizens and in general the Greek economy wants this "extra" revenue there is only one phrase that need to be crystal clear in this legislation : “Non Compulsory use of Greek Seamen” . Of course can motivate the clients (cruise lines), of course you can advertise the Greek Union of seamen, but All these on “optional” basis, not compulsory … If the legislation says “compulsory” then they will just not even look at it… Why : cause Turkey is right next to Greece and Turkey is more commercial and flexible than Greece in every field , see what happend when Heraklion dispointed their client. Look at Malta how quickly they 're picking up turnrounds... Last but not least : pls make this legislation simple , cause what ever confuse clients, clients don’t like it . And its so easy to be discouraged with this fantastic way that the Greek Legislations have to complicate things ... Just A humble View . Christos. M.
